Someone looking to buy a pair of tefillin (boxes, scrolls, or straps), whether for himself or for his son, is often unaware of the details that need attention. What is more, the broad range of tefillin offered by retailers, as well as the sharp difference in price from one pair to another, can be a source of great confusion, and with good reason. Superficial examination of a pair of tefillin does not readily reveal the vast amount of work and effort that goes into the various stages of production, nor the relative superiority or inferiority of the finished product.
The purpose of this work is to make the reader aware of the various issues involved. In addition to setting forth the laws of making and laying tefillin, we aim to familiarize the reader, and especially the bar mitzvah boy, with the procedures by which tefillin are made, problems that often occur en route, and the solutions thereof.

In addition, knowing the technical details involved in the manufacture of tefillin brings the study of hilchos tefillin to life, allowing the reader to picture and fully understand that which he studies.
